Gower Bird Hospital - History

Gower Bird Hospital Logo

Gower Bird Hospital was founded in in 1984 by Simon Allen and Karen Kingsnorth.

They began providing ad hoc care to birds in 1984. Their efforts brought them an ever-increasing number of patients until, by the early 1990s, it was clear that the tremendous amount of unmet need would soon overwhelm them and they began erecting purpose-built facilities in their garden. These have had to be extended year by year as the patients just keep coming!

* In 1996, 501 of our patients were victims of the Sea Empress disaster. We were able to give essential first aid treatment to all casualties found around the Gower coast.

Since 1993, over 11,000 wildlife casualties have arrived at Gower Bird Hospital from all over South Wales. The dots represent numbers of patients, but we just ran out of space in some areas.
