Gower Bird Hospital - History

Gower Bird Hospital Logo

Gower Bird Hospital was founded in in 1984 by Simon Allen and Karen Kingsnorth.

Simon and Karen began providing ad hoc care to birds in 1984. Their efforts brought them an ever-increasing number of patients and in the early 1990s they began erecting purpose-built rehabilitation aviaries. Facilities have been improved every year and now include two intensive care units, one for birds and one for small mammals, as well as facilities for Gower Bird Hospital’s veterinary surgeon.

* • In 1996, 501 of our patients were victims of the Sea Empress Oil Disaster. We were able to give essential first aid treatment to all casualties rescued around the Gower coastline and this was the year Gower Bird Hospital became a registered charity.

Since 1993, over 22,000 wildlife casualties have arrived at Gower Bird Hospital from all over South Wales. The dots represent numbers of patients, but we just ran out of space in some areas.
